So many people have cloned the 808 sounds, but I would much rather have a drum machine with the 808 sequencer and completely different sounds, than a clone of the 808 with some other inferior sequencer (looking at you all 808 clones except for the roland tr08). With a real 808 or a tr08 you can live compose and it is a lot of fun. Pretty much everything else requires you to plan out all your patterns in advance and chain them together. There are other machines that let you do much more programmed changes within a pattern, but none that do song composition which such good sense. The way it works with A/B, 2nd part, fills, and the compose mode is far more advanced and productive than any other drum machine I know. For whatever reason nobody, not even Roland themselves has done a better job with a drum machine sequencer for composing songs than the 808. What makes the biggest difference when putting together tracks, is the thoughtfulness of the sequencer. I'll just chime in again, as someone with waaay to many (not enough?) drum machines, that there are many machines out there with good sounds, and to be honest, unless you are making very conservative house/electro there isn't any particular sound set you need.
